本书研究现代主义女作家朱纳·巴恩斯（Djuna Barnes, 1892—1982）的主要文学创作，探究其独特的文本内涵和艺术手法。本书以“忧郁”为问题意识，以“治疗”为核心概念，发掘其创作中隐含的解剖精神。本书认为，巴恩斯的主要作品都执着地回归到“忧郁”的主题和风格上，其文学形式革新亦配合主题的表达，三组充满悖论的特色——“重复性与变动性”、“自闭性与开放性”以及“自传性与普遍性”，展现出巴恩斯忧郁现代主义的实验意识与艺术张力。
