本书运用马克思主义的立场、观点和方法以及文学批评理论说明戏剧作为一种文学形态是人类社会的一种社会现象, 是人们社会生活和斗争的反映, 是人们交流经验和传递思想感情的一种表现形式。本书分为西方古典戏剧即希腊和罗马戏剧、中世纪戏剧、文艺复兴时期戏剧、17世纪戏剧、18世纪戏剧、19世纪戏剧和20至21世纪戏剧几个部分, 每个部分又由若干章节组成。本书在每个章节的起始都对该部分或章节所涉及的戏剧发展状况或戏剧体裁和流派如喜剧、悲剧、历史剧等以及浪漫主义戏剧、现实主义戏剧、表现主义戏剧、荒诞派戏剧等等产生和发展的社会历史和文化背景作了简明而深入的叙述, 以期帮助读者把戏剧发展的历史放在社会变革和发展的总的进程中加以理解。
作者简介
吕长发，男，1940年11月生，河南省太康县人，中共党员。河南大学外语学院教授，博士生导师。1962年毕业于河南大学，曾在河南省的多个学术机构担任重要职务。主要研究英美文学、西方戏剧以及西方文论，发表学术论文数十篇，出版〈文学理论与文学批评〉（2015）、〈西方文论简史》（2006）、〈文学理论与文学批评概要》（1999）、《贝克特小说研究》（1995）等多部学术专著，出版译著〈无知的乐趣》（2018），并发表译文《论疾病》《金字塔》等。
