“Ready, camera-Action!” The director called out on a June day in 2006, and so was
heralded the beginning of China’s first community movie. The director, screenwriter, actors
and actresses, as well as the production crew, are all residents of Beijing’s Tiantongyuan
Residential Quarter. Four months later, the finished film, My Daughter, How Should I Save
You?, was screened before its first the audience. According to the director, the 30-minute-
long short tells the story of a local girl who over-indulges in the cyber world. The thematic
objective is to increase awareness of Intemet security and the need for family harmony.
Filmed with DV recorders, the movie was released and distributed for free via download
from the community’s website. Local residents participated in the entire film production
process; from casting to scriptwriting and editing. Thus, the movie is regarded as the product
of collective wisdom. The community event brought together residents who before were
strangers. Watching the movie published on the BBS instilled in participants a sense of
camaraderie. Now, the Tiantongyuan colleagues are planning out their next community
film projects, conceived to focus on social issues, such as seniors living alone, a more
mobile population and pet ownership and care.
