弥尔顿（1608—1674）在1641—1660年间为民主自由而斗争，写了大量政论，本书选编的就是该时期的文章。影印的版本为“人人丛书”（Everyman’s Library）1970年版。
1660年斯图亚特王朝复辟，弥尔顿被捕入狱，不久被释放，此后投身文学，创作了《失乐园》(1667)、《复乐园》(1671)和《力士参孙》(1671)。
