本书是以教育部颁布的《大学英语教学大纲》为指导思想，经过多年的教学研究和实践编写的一本通识英语教材，主要供全国大学本科艺体类学生和高职高专的学生使用。本书针对刚入学的艺体类学生学习，考虑到艺体类学生英语基础薄弱，教师在编写教材时重视学生英语基础知识的训练，词汇和语法也都设置了一些重点解释和配套练习题，并且设置了大量的阅读文章，拓展学生的知识面。
