本教材采用“基础模块 不同专业模块”的编写方式，全书分两大部分，其中主体部分共包括基础、结构工程、岩土工程、道桥工程、水工与海洋工程、市政工程和环境工程七个模块，基本涵盖了土木建筑类的所有专业内容，同时每个模块中又按不同的Unit编写。第一、第三、第五、第七章的Unit只含课文；第二、第四、第六章每个Unit包括课文和阅读材料两个部分，Text的文章为体现专业英语特征的非科普性文章，阅读材料选材则注重趣味性和科普性。每篇文章均以侧表的形式给出了相应的专业词汇注解，其中Text文章后面还对文中的疑难句进行了分析注释，并附有与课文内容相关的适量习题以巩固对课文的学习。此外本教材强调培养学生的实际应用能力，因此除了按传统的模式编写外，在每个模块的后面还加入了精心挑选的有关科技英语阅读和写作知识技能训练以培养学生实际应用能力的内容。教材后一部分为教学指南，教学指南部分给出了Text文章的全文译文和部分习题的答案。
