姜涛主编的《英国文学经典教程》与它的姐妹篇《美国文学经典教程》一样，都是按照一个统一体例编写而成的。选文的范围既体现整体性，又考虑现实读者的要求，最早可上溯到中世纪英国文学，最晚下延至上个世纪末现当代英国文学。这部教材共精选出40多位作家的文学作品，并按照年代顺序分为五个部分45课。每个部分前面有简明扼要的中文介绍；每课前面是作家作品介绍，然后是文学作品选读。为了方便读者阅读，精选文本后面还配有文本介绍、注释、关键词和问题等内容。本教材主要供大学本科学生和研究生使用，课程教学时间大约在一年至一年半。本教材同样适合自学英语者自学和英语爱好者闲暇时赏读。
