本教材涵盖20世纪最有代表性的优秀英国文学家：J.康拉德、E.M.福斯特、K.曼斯菲尔德、W.叶芝、T.S.艾略特、D.H.劳伦斯、J.乔伊斯、V.伍尔夫、A. 赫胥黎、S.贝克特和W.戈尔丁，其中有小说家、短篇小说家、诗人和剧作家，四位诺贝尔文学奖获得者。教材每篇课文包括作家的“生平”“创作时期及主要作品”“思想观点”“美学原则和创作手法”“选读”（1篇文学代表作和1篇文论）和“思考题”六部分，概括作家的生活哲学、政治观、道德观、美学观、创作手法和艺术风格，结合宏观历史语境研究和微观文学文本分析，探究各个作家批判现代工业异化效应、质疑殖民主义、张扬女性主义，深思传统与现代性、历史与现代文明、东方与西方冲突等多方面的现代主义和后现代主义文学主题意义，分析文学作品中蕴涵的象征主义、反传统叙事、意识流、荒诞派艺术等创新美学观, 系统阐释20世纪英国文学丰富的思想价值和艺术性。
作者简介
朱望 —————————-
朱望，汕头大学文学院外国语言文学系教授，两次赴美国、一次赴英国作英国文学和西方文化研究项目（国家项目一个）。从1996年至今发表现代英国文学论文多篇，如《论T.S论艾略特的文化保守主义》《文学与文化之间：〈论印度之行〉跨文化的多重意义》《论乔伊斯〈一个青年艺术家的画像〉中的社会化意义》等（刊于《外国文学研究》《国外文学》《外国文学》《英美文学研究论丛》《解放军外语学院学报》等期刊）。著有《现代英国文学大家》和《现当代西方文化名家》，形成了文学与文化相辅相成的配套英文教材。 教授现代英国文学20年（汕大教学无记名评估每位学期97—99分，名列全校第一/校平均分88）；任硕士导师12年；完成汕头大学的“20世纪英国文学”精品课程建设项目，本教材就是项目建设的主要内容；获云南省“优秀教师”称号，多次获云南大学校级、省级和汕头大学校级优秀奖，并获得“李嘉诚基金会卓越教师奖”。
