《新编英国文学选读》（第4版）出版至今已有五年，到了该对教材进行修订的时候。根据我国高等教育的改革需求、教材的使用情况及教师和学生们提出的意见与建议，在《新编英国文学选读》（第5版）中进行了如下修订。 一，新版教材中新增了V.S.奈保尔、朱利安·巴恩斯、伊恩·麦克尤恩和石黑一雄这四位当代作家的介绍及代表作。同时，由于教材篇幅的限制，不得不忍痛删除了亚历山大·蒲伯、威廉·麦克皮斯·萨克雷、E.M.福斯特、D.H.劳伦斯的相关内容，并根据教材使用的实际情况，对部分选文和内容进行了不同程度的调整和更新。 二，我们补充和更新了部分选文后的思考题，旨在启发学生洞察文学作品蕴含的思想价值和精神内涵，体会人类共同情感和全人类共同价值，引导学生在评析英国文学作品、开展跨文化比较和研究时，能够坚持马克思主义世界观和方法论，既坚持文化自信，也展现国际视野，提升思辨能力。 三，我们对之前教材出现的错误也进行了更正。 另外，需要说明的是，《新编英国文学选读》（第5版）保留了先前各版的主要特色，在作品后提供“简评”或“解读举例”，以拓展学生的思路和视野。
