本书由五部分构成，前言部分叙述了研究现状和文化背景，其后三章分别研究了石黑一雄与奈保尔等两位作家的小说叙述者，利用历史事件作为传记的社会语境展现了重塑人类生活愿景的可行性意象，由此可见作为读者的文本受众亦将影响或决定叙事结构与作者情感的阐释方式。最后为结语部分，总结了所提出的论点和研究倾向性与意义。鉴于历史语境的重现，此类自传体小说为重绘特定时代历史事件与个体经历彼此依存的共生关系提供了更为个性化与文学性的解读视角。叙述者的生活经历与传记故事之间所存在的想象性空间为移民作家提供了不可或缺的叙事策略或者范式，并以此阐释或辨析他们的过往经历，通过诉说自我的人生故事构建了一副后现代个体自画像和社群浮世绘图景。
