Introduction to Standard Chinese Pinyin System （2nd Edition） contains a textbook and a workbook. It is written bilingually focusing on learning Pinyin in a meaningful way.
The textbook consists of ten lessons. Lesson 1 provides a brief introduction to Standard Chinese pronunciation and gives a holistic picture of the Standard Chinese pronunciation system. Lessons 2-9 introduce 21 initials and 36 finals， describing how each sound is pronounced. Each lesson provides functional practice of daily life expressions by using newly introduced Pinyin. Relevant tongue twisters and poems are provided to help discriminate and practice difficult sounds. Lesson 10 gives a summary of phonetic spelling rules for writing Chinese syllables and rules for tone changes in the context of intonation patterns.
A workbook corresponding to the textbook lessons provides focused practice. This allows learners to do more Pinyin practice outside of class.

作者简介

沈禾玲（Helen H Shen），美籍华人。美国爱荷华大学（The University of Iowa）教授、中文项目负责人，美国中文教师协会（CLTA）前任会长。研究领域为汉语作为第二语言的阅读习得、发展及与教学。2005-2008 获美国教育部国际研究基金奖，建立了第一最大的中文作为第二语言的阅读网站。2010 获美国国防部星谈基金奖。发表学术论文二十余篇，出版学术著作与大学教材数本。
