本书以英语为媒介, 以比较为手法, 从中国和西方英语国家文明的起源入手, 选取饮食、民居、人生礼仪、民间信仰等中西方民众在长期的生产生活实践中创造和发展起来的风俗习惯和生活智慧进行历时和共时的比对, 使学生全面了解中西方在物质民俗、社会民俗、精神民俗和语言民俗方面的差异及特色, 引导学生学会用英语赏析中西民俗文化, 提高跨文化交际能力。
作者简介
邓长慧，女，武汉大学外国语言文学学院副教授，硕士生导师。自1990年研究生毕业后一直从事大学英语教学工作。2000-2001年以访问学者身份在英国诺丁汉大学进修。主讲课程：大学英语，研究生英语和中西民俗文化对比（通识课）。专注实用英语和传统文化的教学，重视培养学生的英语应用能力和跨文化交际能力。曾多次参与或主持有关英语教改的课题并独立撰写文章多篇，主编并出版了多部著作。
