本书共分为五章, 从第一章至第五章分别介绍了内蒙古的自然条件特点、内蒙古植物资源特征、孢粉学基本知识、现代孢粉形态的研究方法、内蒙古植物花粉形态特征。在第五章共收录描述了内蒙古森林、草原、荒漠三大植被主要植物372种, 隶属81科228属 (包括19变种, 5亚种及少量的栽培种) 。以恩格勒系统 (Englersystem) 为科属种排列顺序, 描述了每种植物花粉的形状、大小、萌发器官类型和数量及花粉粒表面纹饰等形态特征, 并且根据相关文献资料, 对每种植物的花果期、生境、分布、产地、用途等内容进行了整理和凝炼。针对每种植物还配有1-3幅利用扫描电子显微镜拍摄的高清花粉图片, 更加直观地反应出每种植物的花粉形态特征和应用价值。
