《秘境不丹》分三个部分。第一部分“与不丹一起成长”，是作者个人的回忆，讲述作者的童年和学生时代。所刻画的是对外部世界开放前一个不丹村庄的生活，详述了不丹在20世纪60年代初如何开始走出与世隔绝的状态。
第二部分“我们这样生活”，大体是通过作者自己的经历，试图解释他们的一些最根本的信仰和习俗，像转世，像传统医学体系，像建筑传统，像精神信仰帮助保护了他们的环境等等。
最后一部分“人民和地域”，是基于作者对全国各地不同地区广泛的徒步旅行所得，这些地方大都很偏僻。有些旅行是朝圣之旅，不过大多数旅行是去很少见到外来者的乡村、社区和偏远聚居区，就连大多数不丹人也不晓得这些地方。
