Dharma Master Cheng Yen was born in a small town called Chingshui in central Taiwan in 1937.When she was twenty-three years old, she left home to become a Buddhist nun.
Dharma Master Cheng Yen has always led a simple and virtuous life. In her frugality, she made candles and bean powder to maintain a living. In 1966, she established the Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation, and over the years this organization has concentrated its activities in the major areas of charity, medicine, education, culture, international Institute’s FDR Distinguished Public Service Award relief, bone marrow donation, community volunteerism, and environmental protection．
In recent years, Master Chenoe Yen’s contributions have been increasingly recognized by the global community.In 2011, she was recognized with the Roosevelt lnstitute’s FDR Distinguished Public Service Award and was named to the 2011 TIME 100 list of the world’s most influential people. Living a simple life with only the basic necessities, she has actively pursued her work of helping the poor and educating the rich.
作者简介
证严上人，台湾著名宗教家、慈善家，是慈济基金会的创始人与领导人，开创慈济世界，含括“慈善” “医疗” “教育” “人文”四大志业。二O一O年，被台湾民众推选为“最受信赖的人”。
一九三七年，出生于台湾台中的清水镇。一九六三年，依印顺导师为亲教师出家。师训“为佛教，为众生”，奉持不懈。一九六六年，创办佛教克难慈济功德会。一九六六年以后的数十年来，慈济世界在上人慈悲呵护下，一步一步，坚实的茁壮如今遍布全球的慈济人，出现在全世界许许多多有灾难与苦痛的地方，亲手拔除人们的苦与痛，秉慈运悲行于菩萨道，同心实践证严上人三愿：人心净化，社会祥和，天下无灾难。
曾获颁——二OO九年国际慈善论坛“国际慈善功德人物奖”、二OO八年世界佛教友谊会“全球佛教贡献奖”、二OO七年日本庭野和平基金会“庭野和平奖”、二OO四年加州美国亚裔联盟“亚美人道关怀奖”等众多国际性荣誉。
