本书是“教育部九五人文社会科学研究规划项目——个性心理特征研究”的成果，其研究取向属于特质论和社会文化论的综合观点。虽然国人也曾有人以此种取向做过研究，但至今未见以词汇假设为出发点，从纵向和横向两个方面对中国人的人格结构做过系统的研究，这正是本书的创新之所在。在《中国人的人格结构》中，杨波同志以古代典籍《史记》为材料，按词汇构建出具有信效度的古代中国人人格问卷，让102名专家和研究生进行评定，经因素分析得出古代中国人人格结构的四个维度——仁、智、勇发、隐；同时用现代汉语的265个人格特质词语所组
